SGF Akume Warns Electoral Corruption Threatens Nigeria’s Democracy

SGF George Akume warns that corruption allegations in Nigeria’s electoral system continue to undermine public trust in democracy during Democracy Day lecture

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has expressed concern that allegations of corruption in Nigeria’s electoral system continue to undermine public confidence in the country’s democracy.

Akume raised the concern on Thursday while delivering a lecture at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking on the theme, “27 Years of Democratic Governance: Achievements, Challenges and the Road Ahead,” the SGF acknowledged Nigeria’s democratic progress since 1999 but warned that electoral credibility remains a major challenge.

He noted that repeated allegations of malpractice in the electoral process have weakened trust in elections and democratic institutions.

“Electoral integrity remains a work in progress. While our electoral management body and the judiciary have demonstrated growing independence, persistent allegations of corruption in the electoral system and processes remain critical to its integrity,” Akume said.

He stressed that democracy goes beyond voting, adding that it must guarantee equal value for every vote cast.

Akume also called on Nigerians to take active responsibility in strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding electoral credibility.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, he described the past 27 years as a period of resilience and steady progress despite challenges.

He highlighted the country’s record of eight consecutive general elections and peaceful transfers of power, including transitions across political parties.

“The democratic journey since 1999 has nevertheless had its challenges. The significant lesson however is that it has been a journey of resilience and determination,” he said.

He further urged stakeholders to address issues that could weaken public trust, including ethnic and regional divisions that threaten national cohesion.

Akume also pointed to key governance achievements, including economic reforms, infrastructure development projects, and expanded access to healthcare, education and financial services.

He listed initiatives such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the National Health Insurance Scheme, and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as part of democratic gains.

The SGF concluded by calling for renewed commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democratic system for future generations.
