NANS Urges Tinubu to Declare Emergency Over Worsening Insecurity

NANS insecurity emergency call urges President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency and strengthen military action against rising insecurity nationwide

The National Association of Nigerian Students, led by its Senate President, Mr Usman Nagwaza, on Friday called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on insecurity amid continued violence and threats affecting communities and students across Nigeria.

The call was contained in a statement issued in Abuja, where the student body urged the Federal Government to take decisive action to address what it described as worsening insecurity nationwide.

Mr Nagwaza said the association was deeply concerned about the impact of insecurity on students, schools and learning environments, stressing that education cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and violence.

According to the statement, NANS also appealed to President Tinubu to give full backing to the Ministry of Defence by empowering the Armed Forces of Nigeria to intensify operations against criminal elements terrorising citizens.

The student body said its position was guided by national interest, noting that NANS does not support criminality or violence in any form but remains committed to the safety and stability of the country.

NANS further urged Nigerians to rally behind the Ministry of Defence and security agencies, warning against what it described as politics of character assassination that could undermine efforts to restore peace.

Addressing allegations linking the Minister of State for Defence, Mr Bello Matawalle, to banditry, the association dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

The statement said the allegations were unfair and divisive at a time when unity and collective resolve were needed to confront the country’s security challenges.

The call comes amid renewed government efforts to tackle insecurity, with the Tinubu administration mobilising military and security assets across affected regions.

President Tinubu recently appointed General Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence, tasking him with strengthening coordination and delivering a more integrated national security response.

The Federal Government has also announced the refurbishment of more than 100 armoured fighting vehicles and plans to acquire advanced equipment, including drones and mine resistant ambush protected vehicles, to boost operational capacity.

NANS said bold and sustained action was required to secure lives, protect educational institutions and restore confidence among Nigerians, describing security as the foundation for national development.
