The lawmakers demanded the immediate establishment of a permanent military base in the violence-ridden Madagali/Michika axis of Adamawa State.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion by Zakaria Nyampa, who represents the Michika/Madagali Federal Constituency.
Nyampa raised alarm over a new wave of violent attacks that claimed several lives and left many residents abducted.
“These repeated killings are a grim reminder of the vulnerability of my constituents who continue to suffer from violence and neglect,” he said during plenary.
In the most recent incidents, unknown gunmen attacked Dar and Pambla communities, leaving at least five people dead and kidnapping an undisclosed number of others, including women and children.
The House reacted swiftly by calling on the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director General of the Department of State Services to deploy a joint task force to the area.
They also urged the establishment of a permanent Forward Operating Base to serve as a deterrent and restore peace.
The lawmakers further demanded that Madagali/Michika be classified as a national security priority zone.
According to Nyampa, the glaring absence of a long-term security presence has left rural residents exposed, defenceless, and displaced.
He noted that the violence is not only causing human suffering but also destroying livelihoods.
“The continued insecurity is not only causing human tragedy but also disrupting agricultural livelihoods, worsening food insecurity, and deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region,” he warned.
The motion gained widespread support across the House, with lawmakers agreeing that the time for symbolic responses had passed.
The need now is for immediate and permanent action.
“What the people of Madagali and Michika need now is not just our sympathy, but real action, tangible protection, and a sense of justice,” Nyampa added, urging the federal government to stop the cycle of violence.
The House also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide urgent humanitarian aid to those affected.
This includes food, temporary shelters, medical care, and psychosocial support.
A minute of silence was observed in memory of the latest victims.
Members across party lines expressed concern that the region continues to suffer due to poor coordination, limited response times, and outdated security infrastructure.
The lawmakers called for a comprehensive recovery and rehabilitation plan that addresses both physical rebuilding and social trust.
They urged the federal government to fund long-term projects that will restore dignity and security to the affected communities.
In a final move, the House mandated its joint committees on National Security and Intelligence, Defence, and Police Affairs to investigate the recurring breaches.
They are expected to submit their findings within two weeks to guide further legislative action.
The call for a Madagali Michika military base underscores a broader concern within the House over rising insecurity in the Northeast.
Lawmakers have warned that inaction could lead to a total breakdown of trust in state institutions among rural populations already strained by hardship and displacement.
As the region waits for the government’s next steps, all eyes remain on the promised deployment and the outcome of the legislative investigation.
