The decision was reached during a virtual NEC meeting on Tuesday, where members evaluated the activities of the Usman-led committee and its impact on party cohesion. A statement confirming the resolutions was signed by Abdulrahim Imam Chindo.
The council described the actions of the caretaker committee as having undermined the party since its inception, and invalidated all prior notices issued by the Usman-led body to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The NEC reiterated its support for the National Working Committee under Julius Abure, affirming him as the recognised national chairman.
Abure, whose leadership was ratified at the party’s national convention in March 2024 and reconfirmed in November 2025, was directed to commence preparations for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The council also instructed Abure and the party’s national secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, to continue an appeal at the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn a Federal High Court judgment delivered in January 2026.

The NEC convened the meeting in response to calls for both physical and virtual sessions to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the party, signalling a move to consolidate unity ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
