Labour Party Leadership Urges INEC to Uphold Fair Election in August By-Polls

Labour Party Leadership calls on INEC to ensure fair inclusion in the August 16 by-elections, warning of legal action if excluded

Labour Party Leadership has issued a strong appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to avoid any attempt at excluding the party’s logo and candidates from the upcoming August 16 by-elections.

The Julius Abure-led faction, through its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated on Tuesday in Abuja that any such exclusion would be a violation of electoral law and could lead to a court-ordered nullification of the poll.

Citing the Electoral Act 2022, Ifoh stressed that political parties denied participation have the right to seek legal remedy.

He reminded INEC of the Supreme Court’s April 4 ruling, which affirmed that leadership disputes remain an internal party matter.

According to Ifoh, the Labour Party held its convention on March 27 in Nnewi, producing its current leadership under Barrister Julius Abure.

He urged INEC to respect both the court’s decision and the party’s internal democratic process.

Ifoh also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to press INEC to respect the constitution, uphold electoral integrity, and ensure that democracy thrives in Nigeria.

“We will not hesitate to defend our rights within the bounds of the law,” Ifoh concluded, signaling the faction’s determination to fight any form of exclusion.
