Labour Party disowns Arabambi over a court bid for Peter Obi’s WAEC, UNN and NYSC records, saying he is no longer a member
The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ken Eluma Asogwa, said in Abuja on Monday, 14 September 2026, that Abayomi Arabambi, who has sued the West African Examinations Council, the National Youth Service Corps and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, over the academic records of Mr Peter Obi, did not file those cases as a member of the party.

Mr Asogwa said the party kept quiet when the story first circulated online, judging that a reply would only reward attention seekers.
Once newspapers described Mr Arabambi as a Labour Party chieftain, silence was no longer useful. The statement was limited to membership. It did not judge the strength of the suits.
Those suits, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under the Freedom of Information Act, ask the three bodies to release certified records linked to certificates in the name Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi, including a UNN philosophy degree, a 1978 WAEC result and a 1986 NYSC discharge certificate.
Mr Arabambi’s lawyers say formal requests went unanswered. The Labour Party disowns Arabambi as its messenger. It does not, in this statement, defend or attack Mr Obi’s papers.
Mr Asogwa set out a timeline. On 18 March 2026 the National Executive Council suspended 25 members for alleged anti party activity. Mr Arabambi was among them. The National Convention ratified that step on 28 April 2026. “Following the said ratification, the affected members ceased to be members of the Party,” the statement said. No later organ of the party has reversed the decision. “If Abayomi Arabambi has presented himself to the public as a chieftain or representative of the Labour Party, the general public is hereby notified that such representation is entirely unauthorised and, prima facie, amounts to impersonation.”
Party lawyers are reviewing whether to petition the police or take other action. Mr Asogwa added that the clarification had “no bearing whatsoever on the validity or otherwise of his claims against Mr Peter Obi before the court.”
Context is awkward for every side. Mr Arabambi is a former national publicity secretary of the Labour Party. Mr Obi, the 2023 Labour presidential candidate, has since moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress and is that party’s 2027 presidential candidate. The Labour Party itself notes that Mr Obi is no longer its member.
A credentials fight begun by an expelled official therefore sits outside the party’s present ticket, even as headlines still bind the three names together.

The court will decide whether WAEC, UNN and the NYSC must open their files. The Labour Party’s narrower point is already on the record: Mr Arabambi does not speak for it.
