Judgment purchase allegation: Mayaki demands probe of Ighodalo’s spokesman

APC chieftain John Mayaki urges DSS, Police, and EFCC to summon Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor over serious allegations of judgment purchase involving Governor Monday Okpebholo

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Mr. John Mayaki, has called on security agencies to invite Mr. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, the spokesperson of PDP governorship candidate Mr. Asue Ighodalo, for questioning over a serious judgment purchase allegation made on social media.

In a controversial Facebook post, Mr. Ifaluyi-Isibor alleged that Governor Monday Okpebholo used state resources to influence the Appeal Court ruling and is reserving more funds in anticipation of a Supreme Court judgment.

He claimed that “serious money was used to purchase Appeal Court judgment,” accusing the sitting governor of manipulating the judicial process.

Reacting to these claims, Mr. Mayaki, a former Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki, described the statement as not only baseless but a direct attack on the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary and public institutions.

“No responsible citizen, regardless of political leaning, should remain silent when such unfounded and provocative remarks are made against the sanctity of our judicial system,” Mayaki stated.

He urged the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to summon Mr. Ifaluyi-Isibor for a formal investigation into the claims.

I think he needs to be compelled to provide proof of this wild and damaging claim or face the full wrath of the law for attempting to incite the public and undermine our democratic process.

Mr. Mayaki further asserted that if the former commissioner possesses any credible evidence, it should be submitted to appropriate authorities.

Otherwise, he said, “deliberate misinformation, public mischief, and criminal falsehood” should not go unpunished.

Describing the allegations as a form of “destructive opposition,” Mayaki warned that such rhetoric could erode public trust in Nigeria’s legal system.

“This kind of divisive propaganda should be nipped in the bud before it poisons public perception and drags our democratic institutions into disrepute,” he concluded.

The call for official scrutiny comes as political tensions continue to rise ahead of the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, in which Mr. Ighodalo is the flagbearer for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
