PDP Faction to Ratify Goodluck Jonathan as 2027 Presidential Candidate

Jonathan 2027 Ratification moves forward as a PDP faction plans a convention to endorse Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election

The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Abuja announced plans to hold a special convention on Saturday to formally ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The decision was contained in an invitation jointly signed by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Emebong, and National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan, and circulated through the party’s official communication channels.

According to the notice, the Jonathan 2027 Ratification event is scheduled to take place at the A Class Event Centre in Wuse 2, Abuja, with proceedings set to begin at 10 a.m.

The faction stated that the convention would formally endorse Jonathan as its presidential flag bearer, following months of internal mobilisation and consultations aimed at persuading the former president to return to active politics.

The move follows a recent court judgment which the faction interprets as affirming Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election, a development that has energised supporters within the group.

In previous months, the Kabiru Turaki-led faction had intensified efforts to draft Jonathan into the race, including an earlier declaration naming him its sole presidential aspirant after he reportedly failed to appear before a screening panel for two consecutive days.

A member of the Presidential Screening Committee, Babangida Aliyu, had earlier stated that Jonathan was effectively cleared for participation, noting that the party had granted him a waiver due to his previous positions as deputy governor, governor, vice president and president.

Aliyu had further indicated that the waiver process meant Jonathan required no additional screening, describing him as already qualified within the party’s framework.

Despite the growing political momentum, former President Goodluck Jonathan has not publicly confirmed any intention to return to the presidential contest, leaving uncertainty over his participation in the planned convention.

Jonathan 2027 Ratification exercise comes amid deepening divisions within the PDP, with another faction reportedly recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

That faction had earlier this week adopted former national lawmaker Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, further highlighting the widening rift within the party.

The competing declarations have intensified uncertainty over the PDP’s internal cohesion as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
