INEC convenes stakeholders’ meeting in Babura ahead of the August 16 by-election for the Babura/Garki Federal Constituency seat in Jigawa State
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday convened a critical stakeholders’ meeting at its office in Babura, Jigawa State, to fine-tune preparations for the upcoming Babura/Garki Federal Constituency by-election scheduled for August 16, 2025.

The by-election was triggered by the death of Hon. Isa Yaro, the constituency’s former representative, who passed away on May 10, 2024, at age 46.
The major political contenders—Rabiu Mukhtar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Auwalu Manzo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—have already been nominated by their respective parties, raising the stakes for what is expected to be a closely contested election.
Speaking at the forum, Hafiz Khalid, the Electoral Officer for Babura LGA, emphasized that the electoral process was a shared responsibility that required transparency, collaboration, and stakeholder trust.
“The by-election is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation and support of all stakeholders,” Khalid said, urging all present to contribute toward a peaceful and credible poll.
He outlined INEC’s election timetable and procedures, assuring stakeholders of the commission’s readiness to conduct a free and fair election.
The meeting drew wide participation from security agencies, political parties, traditional rulers, community leaders, and transport unions. Several attendees raised important concerns regarding:
- Election logistics
- Voter sensitisation
- Security arrangements
- Political party conduct
The District Head of Babura, Alhaji Muhd Mustapha, pledged support for INEC, saying:
“We will work with INEC to ensure that the by-election is successful.”
Civil society groups and community-based organisations expressed confidence in INEC’s ability to deliver.
Nura Abubakar, a civic group representative, said:
“We are optimistic that INEC will do the needful and ensure a free and fair election.”
Haruna Aminu of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) added:
“We are now educated on what is expected from us in the electoral process.”
Security officials present assured the public of their readiness to secure election materials, personnel, and voters on election day.
“The meeting was successful. INEC has shown strong commitment to transparency,” a security official said anonymously.

As August 16, 2025 approaches, political parties are intensifying campaigns across the Babura/Garki Federal Constituency, with INEC ramping up efforts to safeguard electoral integrity.
