INEC Denies Fake March 26 Resignation Deadline for 2027 Polls

INEC March 26 resignation deadline claim is fake, the electoral commission says, urging Nigerians to rely on verified channels for 2027 election updates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday denied issuing a March 26, 2026 deadline for government officials seeking to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions.

The electoral body made the clarification while reacting to a viral graphic circulating online which claimed that March 26 had been fixed as the resignation deadline for political appointees and public office holders planning to participate in the 2027 elections.

INEC described the claim as false and misleading, stressing that the information did not originate from the commission.

In a statement published on its verified social media platforms, the commission stated that the INEC March 26 resignation deadline being circulated online was entirely fabricated.

“The Commission wishes to state clearly that the information is false and did not emanate from INEC,” the electoral body said.

“INEC has not issued any such announcement, and the graphic being circulated is fake and misleading.”

The commission advised members of the public, media organisations and political stakeholders to disregard the message in its entirety.

INEC also urged Nigerians to rely only on its verified communication channels for election-related announcements and updates.

The commission warned that the spread of unverified content could mislead the public and create confusion about the electoral process.

“Citizens are strongly encouraged to verify election-related information through these official sources and avoid sharing unverified content capable of misleading the public,” the statement added.
