Lagos digital health record revolution begins with Interswitch, UK partnership

Interswitch and UK-based Patients Know Best partner to launch a digital health record system in Lagos, transforming patient care with real-time access and streamlined workflows

The strategic partnership will introduce a patient-centric digital record system, aimed at reshaping healthcare delivery across Lagos.

This innovation is designed to dismantle silos in the state’s fragmented health ecosystem by enabling hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, laboratories, and insurers to securely share and access patient data in real-time.

Mr Olufemi Olapegba, Managing Director for Digital Health Platforms at Interswitch, said the initiative is a step towards a more responsive and efficient health system.

“Interswitch’s collaboration with PKB underlines our broader commitment to driving digital transformation across critical sectors in Nigeria, including healthcare,” Olapegba stated.

“By leveraging cutting-edge technology to streamline healthcare information exchange, we are building an integrated platform that enhances service delivery, improves patient outcomes, and redefines healthcare access in Nigeria and beyond.”

PKB CEO Dr Mohammad Al-Ubaydli described the system as a “game-changer” for Nigerian healthcare, noting that patient-controlled health data fosters trust, accountability, and better care.

“Our secure, patient-centric platform empowers individuals with greater control over their health data while ensuring healthcare providers have real-time access to critical patient information,” he said.

Healthcare professionals across Lagos have welcomed the digital transition. They believe the system will reduce operational inefficiencies, eliminate duplication of tests, and improve coordination, especially for patients with chronic illnesses.

Dr Funmilayo Adedayo, a public health physician at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, emphasised the clinical benefits.

“This initiative will significantly improve our capacity to follow up with patients, especially those managing long-term conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and HIV,”.*PUNCH Healthwise*.

“The ability to view a patient’s comprehensive history at the point of care reduces the risk of drug interactions, facilitates early detection of complications, and ultimately saves lives.”

Originally launched by the Lagos State Government, SHIP is a digital platform offering services like appointment scheduling, online payments, and medication ordering.

The introduction of a digital patient record completes this ecosystem, enabling full continuity of care.

The enhanced SHIP framework mirrors integrated health systems found in the UK and Canada, offering Lagos residents access to modern, connected, and secure healthcare.
