Lawyer Issues Legal Warning Over Enugu NDC Primary Crisis

Enugu NDC Primary Crisis deepens as a lawyer warns party over alleged irregularities and threatens legal action against candidate selection process

A lawyer based in Enugu State, Aroh Dominic, issued a formal warning to the national leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, over alleged irregularities in the party’s primary elections conducted across the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Aroh Dominic, acting on behalf of an NDC member, Idoko Chidozie, cautioned the party against announcing candidates for elective positions in Enugu State, insisting that the credibility of the nomination process remains in serious dispute under the Enugu NDC Primary Crisis.

The lawyer’s position comes amid growing tension within the party following the conclusion of its primaries last week, with competing factions awaiting the national secretariat’s final list of candidates.

In a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the NDC, Aroh alleged that no valid primary elections were conducted in Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South local government areas for positions including the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly.

He claimed that party members and aspirants were present at designated venues on the scheduled dates, but no electoral officials arrived to supervise or conduct the exercise.

According to him, the absence of accredited party officials rendered any purported process invalid, despite the turnout of aspirants and supporters.

Aroh further alleged that some aspirants later conducted parallel exercises, which he said were not recognised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as well as security agencies present at the venues.

He maintained that any attempt by the party’s national leadership to proceed with the announcement or submission of candidates from the affected areas would be legally challenged.

The lawyer warned that failure to address the concerns raised could trigger court action, stressing that the party must uphold internal democracy and due process in line with its constitution and the Electoral Act.

He also demanded a response from the NDC leadership within 24 hours, including clarification on the disputed primaries and the legitimacy of any candidates emerging from the process.

Among the reliefs being considered, according to the letter, are calls for the refund of nomination fees allegedly paid by aspirants, disciplinary measures against officials involved in the process, and a restraining order preventing recognition of any disputed candidates.

Meanwhile, the national leadership of the NDC has yet to officially confirm or publish a final list of candidates from Enugu State.

The situation is further complicated by an emerging internal split within the state chapter, with one faction led by Dr. Johnpaul Anih announcing a separate list of winners, while another faction is aligned with Ibuchukwu Obetta.

The party’s national secretariat has not formally recognised either list, leaving the Enugu primaries in a state of uncertainty as political tensions continue to rise.
