Douye Diri joins APC for Bayelsa’s greater good

Douye Diri joins APC, saying his defection from the PDP was in Bayelsa’s best interest and aimed at fostering unity and development

Douye Diri joins APC formally today, marking a major political realignment in the Niger Delta. The Bayelsa State Governor said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party was made “in the overall interest of the state,” insisting it was a selfless act intended to promote unity and growth.

Speaking on Sunday at the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day service held at the Ecumenical Centre, Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri said someone had to take the initiative, and he chose to do so on behalf of all Bayelsans.

It was the first time he publicly addressed his resignation from the PDP since it was announced on 15 October 2025.

“Somebody had to take the decision, and I took it on behalf of the state, in the best interest of Bayelsa,” he said. “Some of you might not understand now, but later it will be clear to all.”

The governor expressed delight at the presence of political leaders across party lines, describing the gathering as a reflection of peace and maturity in the state.

He emphasised that politics should be used to build, not divide, and credited the atmosphere of stability in Bayelsa to collective effort.

“The peace and security we enjoy today are reasons for gratitude,” Diri added. “Politics should be for development, not to destroy your brother. The gathering here is a testimony to the unity in our state.”

The event drew a distinguished audience, including governors, ministers, legislators, and religious leaders. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his Senior Policy Adviser, Funkekeme Solomon, praised Bayelsa’s culture of thanksgiving and urged continued unity among its people.

The Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, described Diri as a “unifier,” noting that his defection to the All Progressives Congress was timely. “Bayelsa can no longer afford to remain in opposition when key national decisions are made at the centre,” he said.

Similarly, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, hailed Diri’s leadership and described him as “a godsend to Bayelsa,” praying for divine wisdom as he leads the state through this new political chapter.

Delivering the sermon, Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission urged gratitude, assuring the congregation that “as long as Bayelsans make God their Alpha and Omega, their victory and blessings are assured.”

Diri’s defection has been met with widespread interest across Nigeria’s political spectrum, as analysts say it could shift the balance of power in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
