Yusuf Buhari has delivered a heartfelt Buhari’s funeral gratitude message, thanking President Bola Tinubu and other political leaders for their unwavering support during the final days and burial of his late father, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The message came during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on Thursday in honour of the late president, who died on July 13 in London after a prolonged illness.

His body was flown to Nigeria and interred the same day in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Yusuf Buhari, the late president’s son, commended the unity shown by the Nigerian leadership in mourning his father, calling the outpouring of goodwill a reflection of Buhari’s stature beyond politics.

In his words, the Buhari funeral gratitude message encapsulated the family’s appreciation for the show of respect and solidarity extended to them.

“It has shown that he was regarded far more than a politician, but regarded as a friend and a father,” Yusuf Buhari said, addressing members of the council during the commemorative session.

The late Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president from 2015 until 2023.

Known for his spartan lifestyle and anti-corruption rhetoric, Buhari’s legacy has sparked varied reflections across Nigeria’s political and public spheres since his passing.

In his remarks, Yusuf extended appreciation to the entire Federal Executive Council for what he described as a “befitting burial” and dignified honour to his father’s memory.

“To all members of the federal executive council, for the care and befitting burial accorded to our late father, we appreciate you all,” he stated.

He also singled out the leadership of the National Assembly for special recognition, thanking the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, for their presence and participation in the state burial held in Daura.

It has shown that he was regarded far more than a politician, but regarded as a friend and a father.

“I also wish to thank the senate president, speaker of the house of representatives, and all the distinguished and honourable members of the national assembly for honouring the memory of our late father during the state burial in Daura,” he said.

The younger Buhari also acknowledged the impact of the numerous condolence messages, visits, and prayers the family had received, describing them as deeply meaningful.

“Your visits, calls, and prayers symbolise a great honour to the memory of our late father, and we’re sincerely grateful for all the support and solidarity extended to the family,” he added.

The Buhari funeral gratitude message resonated with many present, as it served as a moment of reflection on the late leader’s enduring influence across party lines and generations.

While opinions about Buhari’s leadership legacy remain mixed in political discourse, the unity displayed during his final rites underscored a shared national respect for his role in Nigeria’s history.

As dignitaries continue to pay tributes, preparations are also underway for official memorial events in Abuja and Daura, expected to involve civil society groups, members of the armed forces, and regional leaders.
