Bola Tinubu return from Europe stirs fresh speculation

Bola Tinubu return to Abuja after abruptly ending Europe trip sparks speculation as emergency rule in Rivers nears expiry

Bola Tinubu return to Abuja on Tuesday evening has raised fresh questions after the Nigerian President abruptly ended what was billed as a 10-day private visit to Europe.

The Airbus A330 carrying the 73-year-old President touched down at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at exactly 6:50pm local time, cutting short a stay in Paris and London that began on 4 September. No official reason was provided for the sudden change in itinerary.

The President had initially been expected to remain in Europe until later this week, combining personal time with unspecified engagements, as he has done on previous foreign trips.

This marks his 15th foreign trip in 2025, with the Presidency often describing such travels as a blend of rest and diplomacy.

His last known personal trip was in April, when he spent around 14 working days in the same European capitals.

The timing of the Bola Tinubu return is notable, coming just as the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State is set to expire on Thursday.

While the Presidency has not linked his return to any specific domestic development, observers are already speculating that it may be tied to ongoing political sensitivities in the oil-rich region.

Tinubu’s frequent travel pattern has come under scrutiny, with critics questioning the opacity around his itineraries and the apparent mixing of personal rest with state responsibilities.

The abrupt end to his latest trip only fuels speculation over what may be happening behind the scenes.

Yet, without official clarification, Nigerians are left to interpret the timing and intent of the President’s return on their own.

For now, the Presidency has remained silent, offering no formal statement on either the reason for the early return or the agenda ahead.
