BASIEC Secretary Nuru Abdulhamid has issued a 60-day notice for the Bauchi LG elections on August 17, 2026, following a 360-day alert and reaffirming commitment to credible, transparent polls across the state
Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission Secretary Nuru Abdulhamid stated on Friday, June 19, 2026, in Bauchi that the commission has issued the mandatory 60-day notice for the local government council elections scheduled to take place on August 17, 2026.

The development follows the requirements of the Bauchi State Electoral Law, which directs the commission to notify registered political parties, stakeholders and the public ahead of such contests. BASIEC had already issued a 360-day notice in August 2025, giving participants extended time to prepare.
Nuru Abdulhamid urged parties intending to contest the elections across the state’s 20 local government areas to complete their internal arrangements and comply fully with the Electoral Law and the commission’s guidelines.
“Detailed timelines, procedures, and other relevant information regarding the elections will be released in due course,” he said.
The commission reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, transparent and credible election that reflects the wishes of the people of Bauchi State.
This measured approach reaffirms the value of structured preparation in Nigeria’s democratic framework. Local government elections allow communities to select leaders who oversee vital services such as primary healthcare, basic education, local roads and sanitation.
The announcement builds on previous cycles. In the 2024 local government polls the ruling Peoples Democratic Party won all chairmanship positions, while the All Progressives Congress raised objections over aspects of the process. The current extended notice periods aim to reduce such tensions by allowing fuller engagement from all sides.
Governor Bala Mohammed has emphasised adherence to legal timelines in state electoral matters, underscoring the administration’s focus on due process.
Nuru Abdulhamid’s statement positions the upcoming exercise as one that prioritises inclusivity and public confidence.
