The defection was announced during plenary in the Senate after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Banigo’s letter on the floor of the chamber on Tuesday.

In the letter, the Rivers senator said the decision followed consultations with constituents, political associates and stakeholders across her senatorial district.

Senator Ipalibo Banigo explained that persistent leadership disputes and ongoing litigations within the Peoples Democratic Party had weakened internal cohesion.

Senator Ipalibo Banigo also said the move was intended to align with Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, and with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as part of efforts to advance development in the state.

The lawmaker added that her decision to join the All Progressives Congress was motivated by a desire to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms and his anticipated re election campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the senator, the reforms have contributed to improved economic stability and expanded infrastructure development across the country.

Senator Ipalibo Banigo also praised Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, for her consistent support of the president and her role in advancing initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
