Atiku Tinubu hunger insecurity debate grows as Atiku urges President Tinubu to address food prices, unemployment and security concerns
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to focus on addressing Nigeria’s economic difficulties and security challenges rather than engaging in political exchanges with opponents ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks in response to recent comments by President Tinubu suggesting that opposition figures were “crying wolf” because of concerns about the upcoming election.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that the government’s attention should be directed towards improving living conditions and responding to the concerns of millions of Nigerians.
He said citizens were more worried about rising food prices, inflation, unemployment and insecurity than political disagreements among leaders.
According to Atiku, the central measure of any administration should be its ability to provide solutions to everyday challenges affecting households and communities.
He called on President Tinubu to prioritise policies that would reduce the pressure of the rising cost of living and strengthen security across the country, rather than focusing on criticism from political rivals.
The former vice president also criticised what he described as confrontational remarks by the President during an engagement with leaders of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, arguing that such platforms require reassurance, unity and statesmanship.
Atiku maintained that Nigerians expected practical responses to economic and social challenges, adding that restoring stability and improving livelihoods should remain the government’s primary focus.
“The President’s greatest challenge is not the opposition but the performance of his administration,” Atiku said through his spokesperson.
The comments come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties and government supporters exchanging views over economic performance, governance and national priorities.
President Tinubu’s administration has defended its reforms, saying ongoing policies are designed to strengthen the economy and create long-term growth despite current difficulties faced by many Nigerians.
