Atiku urges Tinubu and governors to make life affordable, saying Nigerians need practical action rather than condolences amid recurring tragedies
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors to take practical steps to make life more affordable for Nigerians ahead of the country’s 66th Independence anniversary.

Atiku made the appeal in a statement on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, arguing that the tragedies affecting Nigerians require more than expressions of sympathy from government officials.
The former vice president said governments at federal and state levels should focus on measures that improve living conditions and place greater value on the lives of citizens.
“As Nigeria approaches Independence Day, this tragedy demands more than condolences. We must make life affordable again and treat every Nigerian life as precious,” Atiku said.
His comments came against the backdrop of recent incidents involving deaths and public safety concerns across the country.
Earlier, reports said Atiku had called for an investigation into the deaths of three people during a stampede in Niger State.
The latest appeal broadens his call to include economic conditions, with Atiku urging governments to address the pressures confronting ordinary Nigerians rather than limiting their responses to condolences after tragedies occur.
Nigeria is due to mark its 66th Independence anniversary on Thursday, October 1, with the Federal Government declaring the day a public holiday.
