APC, NEC Meeting Date Set as Leadership Moves to End Crisis After Ganduje’s Exit

APC NEC meeting date confirmed for July 24 after Ganduje’s resignation. Party moves to stabilise leadership and endorse acting national chairman

APC NEC meeting date has been officially fixed for July 24, as the ruling party takes decisive steps to stabilise its leadership structure following the resignation of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje as National Chairman.

This announcement was made on Monday in Abuja by Festus Faunter, the party’s Deputy National Secretary, following a closed-door session of the National Working Committee (NWC) at the APC national secretariat.

Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, tendered his resignation last Friday citing health reasons.

His departure comes amid internal party discussions regarding unity, electoral strategy, and regional representation.

“The NWC has accepted Dr Ganduje’s resignation with deep appreciation for his service to the party,” Faunter stated. “We wish him well and pray for his full recovery.”

The NEC meeting, now scheduled for July 24, will be held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

According to Faunter, the gathering will deliberate on endorsing the acting national chairman and discuss key party affairs moving forward.

“Whatever we do now, including the endorsement of the acting national chairman, must receive the blessing of the NEC,” he added.

The current acting national chairman, Ali Bukar Dalori, assumed the role in an interim capacity pending formal ratification.

Dalori, a long-time party stalwart and Borno State politician, is expected to guide the party through this transitional period until the NEC confirms a permanent leadership structure.

Party insiders suggest that the July meeting may also be used to review ongoing reconciliation efforts across APC state chapters and to assess strategic preparations for the 2027 general elections.

While the transition has been relatively smooth so far, analysts caution that any leadership changes must carefully balance the interests of key stakeholders across Nigeria’s geo-political zones.

The APC has faced internal strains in recent months, including defection rumours, disputes in state chapters, and concerns about governance performance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Political observers see the NEC meeting as a vital opportunity for the party to refocus and show a united front.

“It’s critical that the APC uses this NEC meeting to clear up any lingering uncertainty,” said political analyst Kola Adebayo.

“The party must show cohesion and resolve if it intends to maintain dominance ahead of 2027.”

Ganduje’s resignation has already triggered speculation about his future political plans, particularly in Kano politics where the party faces stiff competition from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Meanwhile, APC stakeholders have praised the decision to hold the NEC meeting swiftly, noting that early action will help prevent vacuum and confusion within the party’s top ranks.

The APC Constitution mandates the NEC as the highest decision-making organ after the National Convention, with authority to ratify appointments, review policies, and resolve disputes.

Ahead of the July 24 session, there are indications that consultations are ongoing with governors, legislators, and founding party leaders to reach a consensus on permanent leadership appointments and future policy directions.

In the coming weeks, the party is expected to issue formal invitations and an agenda for the NEC meeting, while maintaining ongoing engagements with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure full compliance with political party regulations.
