Ini Ememobong, formerly the Commissioner for Information and Strategy and Special Duties, tendered his resignation on Friday, following Governor Eno’s directive for appointees unwilling to join his defection to the APC to step down.
Governor Eno, along with members of the state executive council, local government chairpersons, and lawmakers, officially switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in a colourful ceremony in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
Ememobong confirmed his departure in a Facebook post, stating, “Today, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive that his appointees who are unwilling to join him on the political journey to the APC should resign.”
He clarified that his decision was rooted in his personal principles and his consistent stance against the APC, emphasising his belief in “politics with principles.”
Despite his resignation, Ememobong stressed that his decision does not indicate any personal disagreement with Governor Eno.
“This decision does not affect my personal relationship with the Governor, who calls me his brother and reposed great confidence in me by saddling me with two very important ministries (Information and Special Duties & Ibom Deep Sea Port),” he wrote.
Ememobong affirmed his continued respect for Governor Eno, even outside of government, and expressed gratitude to both the current governor and his predecessor, Mr Udom Emmanuel.
“Let me convey the very sincere appreciation of my family to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, for appointing me into his cabinet.
Our very special appreciation goes to Mr Udom Emmanuel, the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for his enduring love and belief in me, especially for appointing me into the Executive Council during his administration,” he added.
The former commissioner expressed pride in his contributions during his tenure and appealed for understanding regarding his decision.
“Given another opportunity, I will do more,” he stated, concluding, “I understand this decision may not please everyone, and to those who are disappointed, I humbly seek your understanding.”
