Akpata Edo LP defection explained as former candidate says move to ADC was to strengthen support for Peter Obi’s ambition
Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has explained that the Akpata Edo LP defection to the African Democratic Congress was driven by a strategic decision to support former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.

Olumide Akpata made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, stating that members of his political group believed their objectives would be better pursued within the ADC.
Olumide Akpata said members of the Edo State Labour Party deliberated extensively before deciding to switch platforms. According to Olumide Akpata, the group concluded that their vision of a better Nigeria would be more effectively realised by aligning with the ADC.
“We recognised that supporting him at the level of the Labour Party will come to nought if we are not able to help him achieve the objective of becoming the presidential candidate of the ADC,” Olumide Akpata said.
The former governorship candidate recalled that the leader of the political group moved to the ADC on December 31, 2025, prompting further consultations among Edo-based members.
Olumide Akpata was formally received into the ADC earlier in the week. The defection ceremony followed reports of an alleged attack involving Peter Obi and other party figures in Edo State, adding a dramatic backdrop to the political realignment.
