In his impassioned speech, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called on legislators to uphold discipline, accountability and genuine service to the people.

His words were a stern reminder of the trust Nigerians have placed in the National Assembly, stressing that the time for theatrics in governance is over.

“To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive,” Akpabio declared, setting a serious tone for the session.

He warned against attempts to weaken the legislature, insisting that such actions threaten the very foundation of democracy.

“Those who seek to weaken the legislature seek to delete the structure of democracy itself,” he said, reinforcing the Senate’s role as a democratic pillar.

Urging his colleagues to elevate competence above noise or ambition, Akpabio emphasised that leadership must be earned through merit, not popularity.

“Let us choose the right men for the service of our nation, not the loudest voices,” he added.

The Akpabio Senate plenary address also touched on urgent national concerns, including Nigeria’s economic recovery and flood disasters affecting many communities.

He praised improvements in oil production and President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to stabilise public finances, noting that “no state governor is borrowing to pay salaries.”

The session also saw the return of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central after a six-month suspension.

In a symbolic gesture, several senators appeared in plenary wearing the colours of Palestine in solidarity with the global call for a free Palestine.

As the chamber moves forward into the final legislative quarter of 2025, Akpabio’s message was clear: the Senate must rise above politics and focus on delivering meaningful change.
