The lawmaker, who represents the Cross River North Senatorial District, made his defection official on Tuesday through a letter read during plenary by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, as broadcast on NASSTV.

Jarigbe stated that his decision came after “deep and thoughtful reflection” on the state of the PDP, lamenting what he called irreconcilable differences within the party’s national and state structures.

“I rise to formally notify you and the distinguished leadership of the Senate of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, on whose platform I was elected to represent the good people of Cross River North Senatorial District.”

“It is a profound regret that I cite the prevailing deep-seated and irreconcilable differences, as well as the persistent and deliberate factions within the party at both national and state levels, as the primary reason for my departure.”

Jarigbe explained that his move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was motivated by his desire to continue providing effective representation to his constituents under a more stable political platform.

“In the best interest of my constituents, I have decided to join the ranks of the APC. I believe the APC, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, offers the stability and progress required to deliver democratic dividends to the people of Cross River North,” he added.

Responding, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin welcomed the senator to his new party, saying, “You are most welcome. Please welcome him,” prompting applause from fellow lawmakers.

The defection comes amid escalating turmoil within the PDP, which is currently divided into two rival factions following a bitter leadership tussle in its National Working Committee (NWC).

As previously reported byPUNCH Online on November 2, the crisis deepened after a Federal High Court in Abuja halted the party’s planned national convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The rift has largely pitted supporters of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum against those aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, worsening tensions within the opposition party.

With Jarigbe’s exit, political observers say the APC continues to consolidate its influence in the South-South region, traditionally seen as a PDP stronghold.
