The President of the Nigerian Senate arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja early Monday morning, around 4:00 a.m., after a brief personal vacation in London, United Kingdom.
He was warmly received at the Presidential Wing by fellow senators, aides, and supporters.
Akpabio’s return quells several days of intense social media speculation alleging that he had been hospitalised abroad due to a serious health issue.
These claims had gained traction following his absence after attending the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament held in Geneva, Switzerland from July 29 to 31.
Addressing reporters at the airport, Akpabio dismissed the rumours with a touch of humour:
“If you listen to the social media, you will go to war.”
Now back in the country, the Senate President assured Nigerians of “robust legislative engagements” when the National Assembly resumes plenary.
He emphasized that the legislature would continue to work collaboratively with other arms of government to ensure citizens benefit from democratic governance.
He also defended Nigeria’s active participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) sessions in Geneva, stating it was in the nation’s interest.
“Our presence on the global parliamentary stage strengthens our legislative processes and builds international relationships,” he added.
Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, had previously denied the health rumours.
Similarly, Senator Gbenga Daniel, a fellow lawmaker and former Ogun State governor, had described the reports as false.
