The Senate President praised President Bola Tinubu for signing into law the bills that will create the Federal College of Education, Bende; the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item Bende; and the Federal University, Okigwe.
The announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by Akpabio’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon Eseme Eyiboh.
Akpabio noted that the President’s assent to the education bills reflected a genuine commitment to correcting historic imbalances and investing in the future of the South-East.
He also praised the efforts of lawmakers from both chambers who sponsored and supported the bills.
Special mention was given to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who sponsored two of the bills, and senators including Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Osita Ngwu, and Patrick Ndubueze, the latter being the main sponsor of one of the three education bills.
Akpabio commended their “exceptional leadership” and “effective representation,” adding that the collaboration demonstrated a shared vision for uplifting the region.
He stated, “The establishment of these institutions will go a long way to remove the nagging feelings of distrust and socio-economic marginalization among the people of the South-East.”
According to the Senate President, the three institutions are expected to serve as centres of excellence in education and healthcare, advancing research and knowledge that will benefit not just the South-East but the entire nation.
The move comes amid broader national discussions on equity, regional development, and reconciliation.
Akpabio emphasised that Tinubu’s inclusive approach to leadership marks a significant departure from past administrations that often overlooked the region in terms of infrastructure and institutional presence.
He urged the people of the South-East to embrace the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration and position themselves for further strategic alignment with the federal government.
“I call on the great Ndigbo people to continue to key into the Renewed Hope Agenda and position for strategic and progressive alliance with President Bola Tinubu,” he said.
