El-Rufai’s influence in SDP is strong enough to rattle opponents—and according to Social Democratic Party (SDP) spokesman Darius Kurah, it’s impossible to ignore.

In a recent interview with The Sun, Kurah, who serves as the Publicity Secretary of SDP in Kaduna State, emphasized that Nasir El-Rufai’s presence in the party is far from symbolic.
For Kurah, the former governor represents both strategic depth and disruptive political capital.
“El-Rufai is not just a former governor,” Kurah said. “He’s a strategic thinker whose national reputation and bold reformist ideas give the SDP a credible edge.”
Kurah further stated that El-Rufai’s entry into the SDP unsettles political opponents, especially those resistant to change.
“His presence is deeply felt. It’s unsettling to those who fear genuine reform. He brings a strong support base and connections that align with the party’s progressive agenda,” he added.
El-Rufai formally defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP on March 10, sparking internal debates within his new party.
Though he was later expelled from the SDP under controversial circumstances, Kurah believes the weight of his influence remains undeniable.
Despite the setback, El-Rufai has reportedly been in talks with opposition figures, working behind the scenes toward a broader coalition that could challenge the current administration in the 2027 general elections.
“You can’t erase political relevance overnight,” Kurah said. “Whether inside or outside the party, his voice commands attention.”
