The White House confirmed that Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s special envoy, will travel to Moscow for high-level talks, with a possible meeting with President Vladimir Putin on the agenda.
The Kremlin has described the visit as “important and substantial,” hinting at a rare opening for dialogue despite escalating tensions.
Trump, speaking to reporters, issued a clear ultimatum: Russia must show tangible progress toward peace by next week or face new sanctions, including possible secondary tariffs on allies like China and India.
Adding pressure, Trump revealed that two U.S. nuclear submarines have been deployed to the region.
The Kremlin responded with a warning about nuclear rhetoric, urging restraint.
While Putin maintains that Russia’s demands — including control over four Ukrainian regions and a NATO withdrawal — remain unchanged, officials in both capitals say the coming talks could signal a turning point.
