Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin Calls for Governance, Security Reform

Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin urges strong governance, state policing, and national reform to address insecurity, policy failures, and citizen hardship

The Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin has renewed calls for urgent political and governance reform, citing policy inconsistencies, worsening insecurity, and rising citizen hardship as urgent national challenges.

Ogundoyin, who is also Chairman of the Nigeria Conference of Speakers, made this known during a live interview on “Guest of the Month,” a broadcast programme aired by the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State in Ibadan.

He criticised Nigeria’s political elite for repeatedly prioritising self-interest over national development.

“We fail because every new government discards the policies of the previous one. That is why there’s no continuity or measurable progress,” Ogundoyin said.

Referencing Oyo State, he praised Governor Seyi Makinde’s consistent governance approach and contrasted it with what he described as “the federal pattern of abandonment and waste.”

The Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin position also touched on insecurity. He lamented the loss of over 700,000 lives to violence and called it a national tragedy.

According to him, empowering sub-national governments with internal security responsibilities is essential to ending the violence.

He dismissed fears that state governors would misuse state police, calling such claims unfounded.

He cited the success of multi-tier policing systems in countries like the United States as evidence that decentralised law enforcement can work.

Ogundoyin also criticised the Federal Government’s refusal to publish names of those allegedly sponsoring insecurity, suggesting the silence was politically motivated.

On constitutional reform, he voiced full support for a six-year single term for political officeholders, a proposal recently floated by Governor Makinde.

Ogundoyin argued that such a reform would eliminate distractions linked to re-election and allow leaders to focus on long-term national planning.

He confirmed that the Oyo Assembly voted in favour of local government autonomy during the most recent constitutional amendment process, reinforcing his belief that empowering local councils is critical to Nigeria’s development.

The Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin interview also addressed economic pressures arising from fuel subsidy removal.

He warned that hardship is growing and called on the Federal Government to implement immediate relief programmes to support small businesses and families.

He concluded with a call for civic engagement, urging Nigerians to vote wisely and demand performance.

“Leaders don’t fall from the sky. If we want better governance, we must take responsibility and engage politically,” he said.
