Edo PDP leaders debate Tinubu 2027 strategy amid internal crisis and factional rifts, stressing the need for unity to challenge APC in future elections
The unfolding Tinubu 2027 PDP strategy dominated discussions at a stakeholders meeting convened by the Dr. Tony Aziegbemi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benin City, Edo State.

Addressing party members from all three Senatorial Districts, Aziegbemi – the Caretaker Committee Chairman of his faction criticised the outcome of the party’s legal challenge at the Supreme Court over the Edo governorship election, alleging collusion between the Presidency, security institutions and the judiciary to hand victory to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We did all we could through our legal team, but the system failed us. We appeal for understanding,” he said.
Turning attention to 2027, he added, “The next thing is: how do we get Tinubu out in 2027? We cannot continue with the way things are being run in this country.”
This set off a series of frank contributions from party members, many of whom expressed concerns over the PDP’s internal divisions.
Jimoh Ijegbai, former deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki, questioned the party’s capacity:
“If you’re saying we should remove Tinubu, which vehicle will we use? The PDP is divided. Unless we fix that, we’re only deceiving ourselves.”
Alberta Okonofua echoed the sentiment on behalf of the women’s wing, saying:
“With two factions in Edo PDP, how are we going to unseat him? We must first put our house in order.”
Former campaign DG for Asue Ighodalo, Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, warned:
“With the way institutions are today, I don’t see us winning any election. PDP must solve its problems from the national level if we want to stand against the APC.”
Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate, however, struck a more optimistic tone, declaring:
“Edo is a PDP state. If an election is held today, PDP will win 70 percent of the votes.”
He thanked loyal supporters and announced a donation of ₦2 million to each of the 18 local government chapters of the party in Edo State, urging unity and resilience:
