Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the opening of the National Conference on Fiscal Governance, Transparency and Accountability, the President said Nigeria’s economic future depends on traceable public spending and accountability at all levels of government.
Represented by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, Tinubu declared, “Public funds must be traceable, and officers accountable. Transparency and accountability are not optional, they are key to Nigeria’s future.”
The conference, hosted by the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, brought together government officials, lawmakers, and international partners to explore strategies for improving fiscal governance across federal agencies.
President Tinubu stressed that controlling inflation requires tackling structural inefficiencies, particularly in agriculture and logistics.
“We must reduce inflation by fixing food production and supply chains,” he noted.
Beyond inflation, the President highlighted ongoing efforts to overhaul financial systems, including strengthening the Office of the Auditor-General, digitising public finance management, and making procurement more transparent.
“Oversight is not a political tool. It is a patriotic duty,” Tinubu told lawmakers, urging them to take fiscal responsibility seriously.
He also called for citizen participation in governance. According to him, civil society groups, the media, and ordinary Nigerians must demand transparency and play active roles in safeguarding public interest.
British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, represented by William Robinson, also addressed the conference.
He commended Nigeria’s recent economic reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and tax restructuring.
However, he emphasised that sustained success depends on the government’s commitment to “transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement.”
Montgomery encouraged Nigeria to scale up digital innovations and adopt modern tools to monitor public spending effectively.
