El-Rufai’s 12 Questions Spotlight Fuel Subsidy Savings and Reform Outcomes

Former Kaduna governor’s queries focus on ₦15.8 trillion estimated savings and tangible benefits for Nigerians

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has drawn public attention with a set of 12 questions directed at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, focusing on the outcomes of economic reforms and the utilisation of savings from the removal of fuel subsidy.

The questions, which have circulated widely, raise concerns about transparency and the tangible benefits delivered to Nigerians following the landmark policy changes introduced in 2023.

Central to the queries is the estimated ₦15.8 trillion generated in additional resources for the federation from the petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms between June 2023 and December 2025.

According to figures released by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, the Federal Government received about ₦5.4 trillion of the savings, while states and local governments shared ₦10.4 trillion through the Federation Account.

The government has stated that the fiscal space created by the reforms supported infrastructure projects, wage adjustments, student financing, mortgage support, consumer credit, healthcare, education and social protection programmes.

However, El-Rufai’s questions challenge the administration to provide clearer accountability on how the savings have translated into improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians, amid persistent economic pressures.

The former governor’s intervention has renewed debate over the sequencing and impact of the reforms, with calls for greater transparency on the allocation of the additional resources and the responsibilities of the various tiers of government.

As the questions continue to generate discussion, many Nigerians await detailed responses that address both the scale of the savings and the concrete benefits delivered at the federal, state and local levels.
