Buba Galadima Explains North’s Support for Peter Obi

Buba Galadima Peter Obi remarks explain why the North backed the former Labour Party candidate and an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance

Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has explained why political interests in Northern Nigeria aligned with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying the decision was driven by strategic political calculations rather than ethnic or religious considerations.

Galadima made the remarks during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, where he argued that a Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket represents the best opportunity to rescue Nigeria and promote national reconciliation.

According to Galadima, the proposed alliance would serve as a “healing ticket” capable of helping Nigerians move beyond longstanding political divisions and building greater national unity.

“We aligned with Obi and we have a reason. In politics, you do mathematics, and you calculate; it is our belief that that is the only ticket that can salvage Nigeria,” Galadima said.

He added, “Not only salvation; it is a ticket we call the healing ticket, such that we can forget the past. After all, a lot of people call us names because we brought Obi.”

Galadima maintained that his political decisions are not influenced by ethnicity or religion, despite criticism from some quarters over his support for Obi.

“I don’t want to mention tribe or religion in my politics, but we are being called a lot of names. You may never know. We’ve been having this fight in this part of the country,” he said.

The comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with discussions continuing across party lines over possible alliances that could reshape Nigeria’s presidential contest.

Peter Obi, who emerged as one of the leading contenders in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, continues to feature prominently in conversations about opposition coalition-building.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in the same election, also remains a key figure in ongoing consultations among opposition leaders seeking to present a united front.

Although no formal agreement on a joint presidential ticket has been announced, Galadima’s remarks add to increasing speculation over possible opposition partnerships aimed at challenging the ruling party in the next general election.
