Nigeria Democratic Congress has uploaded Peter Obi’s name to the INEC portal as it files an appeal and stay of execution against the party’s deregistration order
National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress Senator Seriake Dickson announced on Monday 30 June 2026 in Nigeria that the party had uploaded the name of its presidential candidate Peter Obi to the Independent National Electoral Commission portal, following the filing of an appeal and application for stay of execution against a court judgment ordering the NDC’s deregistration.

Senator Seriake Dickson, the former Bayelsa State governor, disclosed in a statement that the party served the appeal and accompanying application on the INEC Chairman.
He maintained that the NDC remains a duly registered political party that participated in all electoral processes and conducted its primaries under INEC supervision.
Dickson confirmed the party received access to the INEC portal to upload candidates for the 2027 general elections.
He stated that the names of both himself and Peter Obi had been uploaded, while the vice-presidential candidate’s details would follow after completion of documentation.
The NDC leader emphasised that the party is operating within INEC’s timetable, with submissions for National Assembly candidates closing on 11 July and those for governorship and state assembly candidates ending on 17 July.
Dickson appealed to party members to remain calm, noting that reconciliation had begun after the primaries.
He assured unsuccessful aspirants that they would be integrated into the party’s campaign structures and committees.
He added: “Today, the NDC has filed an appeal against the ruling as well as a stay of execution/injunction, which has been served with a covering letter to the INEC chairman and his team to do what is right according to law and what is legally sensible.”
Dickson stressed the party’s legitimacy, saying: “The Nigeria Democratic Congress has come to stay and remains a duly registered party in Nigeria which has participated in all the political processes so far… What is left is the administrative process of submitting the names to INEC, and we have been granted access to the portal to upload our qualified candidates.”
This development follows a court ruling that ordered the deregistration of the NDC.
The party’s swift legal response and continued engagement with INEC highlight the intense political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections.
Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party banner, brings significant national profile to the relatively new NDC platform.

The judiciary will ultimately determine the status of the deregistration order, while INEC continues to manage the candidate nomination processes within its established timelines.
