Dickson Claims Tinubu, APC Will Lose 2027 Election

Seriake Dickson says Nigerians will determine the 2027 election outcome and calls on the judiciary to protect the democratic process

Seriake Dickson, National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said in Abuja on Sunday, 29 June 2026, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be voted out of office in the 2027 general election, expressing confidence that Nigerians would demand a change in leadership at the polls.

Dickson made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, where he discussed preparations for the next general election and his party’s expectations ahead of the contest.

“As leader of the NDC, and as a Nigerian who knows the feelings and the yearnings of Nigerians, who also knows that their aspirations have not been met, we believe that the APC government, APC as a party and President Tinubu will be defeated massively,” Dickson said.

The former Bayelsa State governor, however, stressed that the outcome of the election would ultimately rest with voters rather than political parties.

“However, it’s not for one person to decide. It’s a decision for Nigerians, and that’s why you must open up the political space and not constrict it by contrived legal shenanigans using the judiciary to authenticate and legitimise what is morally reprehensible,” he added.

Dickson also appealed to the judiciary to remain impartial throughout the electoral process, arguing that public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions would be critical as political activities gather pace.

“My plea to the leadership of Nigeria’s judiciary, which is the pride of our nation and the one that holds the balance, while we politicians can do the political struggle and INEC, is to please don’t allow desperate politicians to truncate our democracy,” he said.

His comments come as political parties continue early consultations and strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, despite the electoral cycle still being more than a year away.

Recent months have seen increasing debate over opposition cooperation, internal party restructuring and the future of Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

President Tinubu and the APC have repeatedly defended the administration’s economic reforms, arguing that policies including the removal of the petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms are laying the foundation for long-term economic recovery.

Opposition figures, however, have maintained that many Nigerians continue to face significant economic hardship, making governance and the cost of living likely to remain dominant issues in the next election campaign.

Dickson’s remarks add to the growing political discourse ahead of 2027, although the eventual outcome will depend on party nominations, campaign dynamics and, ultimately, the choices made by Nigerian voters.
