Atiku Abubakar has alleged a plot to stop the ADC from contesting the 2027 election, warning of threats to Nigeria’s democratic process
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday, 29 June 2026, in Abuja, alleged that there is an ongoing plot to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from participating in the 2027 general election, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

The allegation was conveyed through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, who said intelligence available to Atiku’s camp suggested that political and legal mechanisms were being deployed to weaken the opposition party ahead of the polls.
According to Shaibu, the alleged moves represent a coordinated effort by elements within the ruling establishment to frustrate the ADC’s emergence as a viable alternative in the next election cycle.
“We are fully aware of their plots. While they seek to sow confusion within the opposition, we know their real target is the ADC because it represents the most credible alternative,” Atiku was quoted as saying.
Atiku further questioned the political motivation behind alleged attempts to destabilise opposition parties, arguing that such actions reflect insecurity within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said Nigeria’s electoral space must remain open and protected, insisting that no administration has the authority to determine which political parties citizens are allowed to support at the ballot.
“The ballot is sacred, and every attempt to tamper with it is an attack on the Republic itself,” he said, warning that efforts to restrict political participation would amount to a threat against democratic governance.
The former Vice President also called on the judiciary to remain independent and resist external influence, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organisations and international partners to closely monitor developments ahead of the 2027 elections.
He stressed that rising political tension should not distract from pressing national challenges, including inflation, unemployment, insecurity and economic hardship, which he said remain the priority concerns of ordinary Nigerians.

Atiku’s remarks add to the growing political debate surrounding the 2027 elections, as parties intensify early positioning, alliances and messaging ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral cycle.
