ADC names Amaechi as Atiku’s 2027 running mate

ADC has announced Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the 2027 election after consultations with party leaders and stakeholders

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election in a statement issued on June 15, 2026.

The party confirmed that Amaechi will serve as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, completing what it described as a nationally balanced presidential ticket ahead of the polls.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, following what the party described as extensive consultations with leaders, coalition partners and stakeholders across the country.

According to the statement, Amaechi emerged as a strategic choice due to his wide political experience and strong support base across different regions.

“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), after extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones, is proud to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the statement read.

The party noted that Amaechi’s selection followed his strong performance in the presidential primaries, where he reportedly emerged as runner-up and secured significant backing from party members nationwide.

It further described the joint ticket of Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi as a partnership of experienced statesmen capable of addressing Nigeria’s governance challenges and restoring public confidence in leadership.

Amaechi’s political career was highlighted in the statement, including his time as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, and his tenure as Minister of Transportation, where he led major rail and transport projects.

The ADC also emphasised his political influence in the South-South and his ability to build cross-regional alliances as key factors in his selection.

Describing the ticket as a “national coalition,” the party said the pairing represents unity across regions and generations, while pledging to focus on security, economic reform and job creation.
