Three Lawmakers Deal APC Shock With Defections to ADC, PRP

APC Lawmakers Defection to ADC PRP as three House of Reps members dump APC for opposition parties in a major parliamentary shake-up

Three members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday announced their departure from the All Progressives Congress, APC, defecting to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, in a development that signals a fresh wave of political realignment in the National Assembly.

APC reps defection to ADC and PRP was formally announced during plenary shortly after lawmakers resumed from the Sallah recess, with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas reading the individual resignation letters on the floor of the chamber.

Rabilu Bala, who represents Jama’are and Itas Gadau Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, formally exited the APC to join the PRP, citing persistent internal disagreements within the ruling party and a desire to better serve his constituents.

Abbas confirmed that Bala’s letter emphasised the need for a political platform that would allow him to pursue what he described as more effective representation for his constituents.

In a separate move, Abubakar Zango, who represents Yola North, Yola South and Girei Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, resigned from the APC and joined the ADC.

Zango stated that his decision was guided by conscience and national interest, adding that he remained committed to his legislative responsibilities and democratic values despite the party switch.

Also defecting was Abdullahi El Rasheed, the member representing Dukku and Nafada Federal Constituency of Gombe State, who similarly left the APC for the ADC.

His move, alongside that of Zango, strengthens the ADC’s presence in the lower chamber, while further reducing APC’s numerical strength in the House.

The defections were formally acknowledged on the floor of the House, marking one of the most notable post-recess political shifts in recent parliamentary activity.

Political observers say the development reflects ongoing tensions within party structures and a broader pattern of realignment as lawmakers reassess their affiliations ahead of future electoral contests.

Despite the defections, all three lawmakers pledged continued commitment to their legislative duties and vowed to remain focused on constituency representation.
