Peter Obi Emerges Sole Aspirant for NDC Presidential Ticket

Peter Obi is the only aspirant to purchase the NDC presidential expression of interest form ahead of the party’s 2027 primary process

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emerged as the sole aspirant for the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress after the party closed the sale of Expression of Interest Forms for the 2027 election.

According to party records, Obi was the only aspirant to purchase the presidential form before the deadline, positioning him as the leading figure in the party’s preparations for the next general election.

The development has fuelled expectations that the former governor could eventually emerge as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, subject to screening and other internal processes required by the NDC.

While the presidential form sales have officially closed, the party announced a one-week extension for aspirants seeking governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly tickets.

In a statement, National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu said the previous deadline of 6 p.m. on May 17 had been extended to midnight on May 24, 2026.

Enekweizu clarified that the extension does not apply to the presidential contest, stressing that the process for collecting presidential Expression of Interest Forms had concluded.

According to the party’s timetable, screening of aspirants who purchased and completed their forms commenced on Tuesday, May 19, and will end on May 26, 2026.

The party added that the collection and return of nomination forms for cleared aspirants would run from May 20 to May 26.

NDC also warned that no further extension would be granted and directed aspirants to attend screening and pre-qualification interviews with the required documentation, including educational certificates, voter cards, membership cards, passport photographs and curriculum vitae.

The party said aspirants would be assessed based on factors such as competence, character, capacity, local realities and the preferences of the electorate. It also directed its screening committee to consider affirmative action provisions for women, youths and persons living with disabilities.

Obi recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress. His status as the only presidential aspirant places him at the centre of the party’s strategy as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 election.

The former governor is expected to undergo the party’s screening process before any formal confirmation of his candidacy.
