In a post shared on social media, El-Rufai expressed his personal opinion that the Southern region should be allowed to complete its remaining four-year cycle in office.
He suggested that such an arrangement could promote political balance and stability within Nigeria’s evolving democratic structure.
El-Rufai also pointed to the possibility of a political alliance involving key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing it as a potential framework for national cooperation.
He argued that leadership rotation could help address current national challenges while preserving long-term unity across regions.
According to him, Northern political actors should consider stepping back from the 2027 presidential race, with opportunities reopening in the 2031 election cycle.
El-Rufai maintained that by that time, any interested Northern candidate would have a clearer path to contest for the presidency.
