APC Blasts Seyi Makinde Over Violent ‘Operation Wetie’ Remarks

APC criticises Seyi Makinde over operation Wetie controversy intensifies as ruling party condemns governor’s remarks as reckless and inciting violence

The ruling All Progressives Congress has sharply criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over remarks referencing the historic “Operation Wetie,” describing his comments as reckless and unbecoming of his office.

APC Seyi Makinde Operation Wetie controversy erupted following comments made by the governor at a political summit in Ibadan, where he warned against what he described as the excessive concentration of legislative power under a single political party.

During his address, Makinde referenced the violent political unrest of Nigeria’s Western Region in the 1960s, a period commonly associated with the phrase “Operation Wetie,” which is widely interpreted as a symbol of political turmoil and bloodshed.

In a strongly worded response, the APC said the governor’s remarks amounted to an incitement to violence and questioned his suitability for the responsibilities of his office as Chief Security Officer of the state.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated that it was deeply troubling for a sitting governor to invoke such a volatile historical reference in a charged political environment.

The ruling party warned that comments of this nature could heighten tensions, potentially leading to unrest and undermining public order.

It further urged security and intelligence agencies to monitor the situation closely, insisting that constitutional immunity does not protect public officials from accountability when statements are perceived as threats to national stability.
