Adewole Adebayo SDP coalition rejection as former presidential candidate distances party from elite alliances ahead of 2027 elections
Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has distanced the party from ongoing opposition coalition discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that elite political alliances are not the solution to Nigeria’s electoral challenges.

The Adewole Adebayo SDP coalition rejection was contained in a statement issued by his media team, in which he emphasised the need to focus on mobilising disengaged voters rather than negotiating power-sharing arrangements among political elites.
Adewole Adebayo said many existing coalition efforts lack credibility, discipline, and shared values, warning that such arrangements risk repeating past political mistakes if not grounded in civic participation.
According to him, meaningful political progress depends on engaging the large segment of Nigerians who abstained from voting in previous elections, rather than concentrating on elite-driven partnerships.
He stressed that strategic political partners should include citizens and groups outside traditional political structures, particularly those who have historically stayed away from the electoral process.
Adewole Adebayo further noted that voter apathy remains a major concern, pointing out that a significant portion of registered voters did not participate in the last general election.
He said the SDP is instead pursuing what he described as a “civic coalition,” involving grassroots organisations, professional bodies, and ordinary citizens committed to governance reform.
While acknowledging that discussions have taken place with some political groups, Adewole Adebayo said several talks collapsed due to internal crises within those organisations.

He added that formal political alliances may only become relevant after party primaries, but maintained that the SDP’s broader goal is to build governance anchored on accountability and principles rather than mere electoral victory.
