Kalu Faces Growing Pressure to Join Abia Gov Race

Kalu Abia governorship 2027 bid gains momentum as stakeholders urge Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu to declare interest

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, is facing growing calls to contest the Abia State governorship in 2027, as political stakeholders across the state intensify pressure for him to declare his ambition.

The push gained fresh momentum on Thursday when leaders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency endorsed him as a preferred candidate, describing him as a unifying figure capable of repositioning the state.

The endorsement was announced during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Uzoma Ihuka for the House of Representatives seat under the All Progressives Congress.

According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, the mobilisation forms part of a broader political alignment within the Ngwa bloc, a key power base in Abia politics.

Speaking at the event, Benjamin Kalu expressed confidence in the administration of Bola Tinubu, noting that the policies of the Federal Government have strengthened the ruling All Progressives Congress nationwide.

He contrasted this with what he described as instability in opposition parties, adding that the APC remains focused on governance and development delivery.

Addressing calls for his governorship bid, Benjamin Kalu acknowledged the growing support but stopped short of making a formal declaration, stating that he would respond at the appropriate time.

He urged supporters to await a formal announcement at the state capital, Umuahia, where he said such a decision should be properly communicated in line with constitutional expectations.

The speculation comes amid rising political activity in the state, with analysts pointing to his increasing grassroots engagements across key areas including Bende, Obingwa, and the Ngwa axis.

Benjamin Kalu’s growing political profile has also been linked to his criticism of certain policies of Governor Alex Otti, particularly on issues relating to infrastructure, economic development, and inclusiveness.

Observers say these interventions signal early positioning ahead of what could become a fiercely competitive governorship race in 2027.

While Governor Alex Otti continues to defend his administration’s record, the emerging political dynamics suggest a potential high-stakes contest between the incumbent camp and a reinvigorated opposition.

With endorsements building and political structures aligning, Benjamin Kalu’s anticipated decision is expected to significantly shape the trajectory of Abia politics ahead of the next electoral cycle.
