A Nigerian lawyer and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, in an interview on Arise Television, called for urgent and far-reaching reforms within Nigeria’s judiciary, urging stronger enforcement of ethical standards and strict sanctions against erring judicial officers.

Kenneth Okonkwo stressed that the judiciary must consistently uphold its ethical codes to preserve public confidence, warning that failure to discipline misconduct could normalise unethical behaviour within the legal system.
The former political spokesperson argued that continuous training and professional development for judges is essential, noting that judicial officers must remain updated on evolving legal knowledge and standards in order to maintain competence and impartiality.
In a firm warning, Kenneth Okonkwo judicial ethics reforms remarks highlighted what he described as the danger of unchecked misconduct, stating that when wrongdoing is not punished promptly, it risks becoming entrenched and accepted within institutional culture.
He further cautioned that increasing informal associations between members of the bench and external actors could undermine judicial independence, stressing that strict adherence to ethical boundaries is critical to maintaining public trust.
Okonkwo maintained that every profession has its own standards, but insisted that the judiciary must adopt zero tolerance for behaviour that could compromise its integrity or weaken its role as the final arbiter of justice.
