In a strongly worded message shared on Instagram, Betty Akeredolu, widow of the late Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, rejected criticism of her decision to contest under the Labour Party platform for the Imo East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

She stated that she would not apologise for choosing what she described as “purpose over politics”, insisting that her decision was driven by principle rather than party loyalty.

The former first lady, who hails from Emeabiam in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, stressed that her identity and political responsibility are rooted in her home state, despite her years of residence and public service in Ondo State.

According to her, the decision to align with the Labour Party reflects her commitment to inclusion and women’s participation in leadership, describing the platform as one that better aligns with her vision for governance.

“This is not about party loyalty. It is about purpose, people, and progress,” she wrote, adding that her focus remains on delivering meaningful impact.

Her remarks come amid heightened political scrutiny and debate over party switching ahead of the 2027 election cycle, particularly among high-profile aspirants.
