Obika communicated his decision in a letter to the House on Wednesday, citing a protracted leadership crisis within the Labour Party.
In the letter, Obika highlighted deep divisions and the emergence of multiple factions as the main factors undermining the LP’s capacity to function effectively.
“This decision has become necessary and inevitable due to the prolonged and unresolved leadership crises in the LP,” he stated.
Obika noted that reconciliation attempts had failed, leaving the party weakened and unable to operate democratically.
He also pointed to the recent Area Council elections in the FCT, where LP candidates were reportedly not uploaded on the INEC portal, causing widespread disenfranchisement of supporters.
“The impact of this internal crisis was more evident during the recent Area Council elections in the FCT, which eroded confidence in the party leadership and organisational structure,” Obika added.
The lawmaker explained that sustained pressure from political associates and constituents influenced his decision.
“This decision is informed by consistent pressure, appeals, and demands from our constituency, political associates, and stakeholders of the APC who have persistently urged me to return to my political family,” he said.
