Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will navigate its current political turbulence, insisting that the crisis within the party is temporary.

Makinde made the remarks on Tuesday during an expanded meeting of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja, following the resignation of Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, which left Makinde and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, as the party’s only remaining governors.
“It’s a challenging period for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria,” Makinde said.
“We are only two remaining, but we are not bothered. This period will also go away. It will pass away.”
Makinde emphasised that the historical record will view those who remain in the party as standing on the side of the people.
“When the story of this period is told, when the story of democracy in Nigeria is told, they will find us on the side of the people,” he added.
Also speaking at the meeting, former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, stressed the importance of the party adhering strictly to its constitution and the rule of law.
He noted that a recent Appeal Court judgment provides an opportunity for the PDP to reorganise.
“The Board of Trustees views the judgment as a directive for the party to begin again while strictly adhering to its constitution and the rule of law,” Wabara said.
“We must work in accordance with the Constitution. You can never go wrong if you abide by the Constitution and the rule of law.”
Makinde’s remarks come amid a wave of defections that has reduced the PDP’s governorship count to just two states.

Despite the setbacks, the Oyo Governor remained optimistic about the party’s ability to recover and maintain its relevance in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
