Peter Obi Leads ADC Campaign Tour in FCT Council Polls

Peter Obi leads an ADC campaign tour in the FCT, visiting Kugbo market and calling for emergency response reforms ahead of council polls

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party and recent defector to the African Democratic Party, Peter Gregory Obi, has led a campaign tour in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of upcoming council elections, engaging traders and residents alongside ADC members and supporters.

Mr Obi began the tour with a visit to the Kugbo Furniture Market, a major commercial hub that was recently affected by a devastating fire outbreak.

Writing on his official X account after the visit, the former Anambra State governor described the losses suffered by traders as particularly painful amid Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship.

“At a time when many Nigerians are grappling with deepening hardship and poverty, such losses are especially painful,” Obi said.

He assured affected traders that recovery was possible despite the setback, stressing that the right support structures could help them rebuild livelihoods and restore economic activity.

The former presidential candidate used the visit to renew his call for far-reaching reforms to Nigeria’s emergency response framework, describing the Kugbo incident as a stark reminder of systemic weaknesses.

“A nation that truly cares for its people must invest in efficient, well coordinated emergency services that respond promptly and effectively to crises, saving lives and livelihoods,” Obi said.

The Peter Obi ADC campaign stop also included a visit to a local market, where he was joined by Moses Paul, the ADC chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council election.

According to Obi, the outreach was aimed at strengthening grassroots engagement ahead of the polls and encouraging active participation in local governance.

He emphasised that credible leadership at the council level remains critical to improving everyday living conditions for residents of the capital territory.

“We must work towards a Nigeria where preventable tragedies are avoided, and where institutions operate effectively for the benefit of all,” Obi said.
