Nigerian Army Denies Mutiny Claims Over Salaries

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Colonel Apollonia Anele, the Army said at no point has there been any threat of mutiny, noting that such actions are a grave offence under military law and contrary to the discipline and professionalism of its personnel.

Colonel Anele criticised the online publication for relying solely on anonymous, unverifiable sources, calling the narrative “mischievous” and designed to undermine public confidence and national security.

“The officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army are trained to channel grievances through established military procedures rather than public platforms,” the statement added.

The Army highlighted that the Federal Government has consistently prioritised troops’ welfare, including consolidated salaries, rank-based and operational allowances, hardship pay, and other entitlements, which vary according to deployment, qualifications, and responsibilities.

The statement further noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has engaged authorities on troops’ welfare since assuming office, yielding positive results.

Ongoing reforms include periodic salary reviews, improved accommodation, medical care, insurance packages, and enhanced operational allowances.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed that it remains a “cohesive, disciplined and professional force” focused on defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations.
