EFCC Warns Against Political Attacks on Commission

EFCC political attacks warning issued as commission vows to continue investigations without fear or favour ahead of 2027 elections

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has warned that some politicians and groups are planning campaigns of calumny to intimidate the commission, its spokesperson Dele Oyewale said on Thursday in Abuja.

Oyewale stated that a “motley crowd of paid jobbers” had been recruited to orchestrate media attacks against the commission and its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, alleging political bias in the execution of its mandate.

“Their objective is to befuddle the work of the commission and, through scaremongering, intimidate the commission into a timid mode,” he said, warning that the campaign is likely to intensify as the political space heats up ahead of the 2027 general election.

The EFCC emphasised that it will not tolerate attempts to distract it from its mandate of improving public accountability and reiterated its non-partisan stance.

Oyewale noted that any political actor, whether in the ruling party or opposition, with corruption allegations “has no hiding place” from the operational radar of the commission.

He added that several prominent members of both ruling and opposition parties are either under investigation or facing trial, stressing that the commission operates strictly within its Establishment Act.

“Commentaries about the presumption of innocence of a defendant in court are in line with constitutional provisions and are not intended as defence of any individual or group,” Oyewale said.

The EFCC spokesperson also clarified that the commission has no alliance or working relationship with any political party, and that all attempts to coerce or blackmail it into revealing politically exposed persons under investigation would fail.

“The EFCC reiterates its commitment to justice, without fear or favour, in the fulfilment of its mandate,” he said.
